The presence of the plot elevated above Instow framing the two vistas in either direction (down the Estuary and to the confluence of the river and ocean, flanked by Appledore and Braunton Burrows) incentivises it’s re-imagination into a home which not only maximises the coastal location but adds architectural value through high quality design and construction.

Project Location:

Instow, North Devon

Project Size:

325m2

RIBA Stages 1-5

Completed.

The external appearance aims to clearly separate the ground from the first floor. This is to place emphasis on the upper, highlighting the pavilion style form, with the lower floor being subservient and hidden below the oversailing timber clad element. The design is characterised by a monolithic ground floor, finished with a light linear brick (reflecting the horizontally/ linearity of the building) as it protrudes out from the gradient.
The design is unapologetically contemporary in-line with recent newly build coastal dwellings. The design has a style of modern-day architecture and does not attempt to take any stylistic influences from the variety of nearby buildings. There are a plethora of building styles (and ages) nearby and any attempt to adhere to one (or all) would be futile and realise a confused, ill-considered design which in fact truly answers to none.
